Despu\u00e9s de la escuela de medicina y el servicio en la Marina de los EE. UU., El Dr. Ch\u00e1vez complet\u00f3 su residencia en psiquiatr\u00eda en la Universidad de California en San Diego y posteriormente obtuvo una maestr\u00eda en Inform\u00e1tica M\u00e9dica en la Universidad Northwestern. Como investigador principal, sus principales \u00e1reas de investigaci\u00f3n incluyen trastornos por adicci\u00f3n, depresi\u00f3n, trastorno bipolar, ansiedad, esquizofrenia y trastorno por d\u00e9ficit de atenci\u00f3n.
